"Adept in both art and story and able to provide extremely precise advice for both, Jayd is one of the most passionate comic story editors I’ve ever come across. She really cares about getting it right." —Arielle
If you’re interested in leveling up your comic and art skills, getting to the heart of your story, punching up what makes it interesting and true -- all while keeping everything running on a reasonable schedule -- Jayd is absolutely the person to hire. I hired Jayd to help me get a personally significant project, a 27 page mini-comic, published in time for a convention. I had made hundreds of pages of comics before, but I came to Jayd so she could help me rebuild my comic making process and mindset from the ground up. Specifically, I was interested in how to make comics in a way that felt more enjoyable and fun, manageable for my time, and healthy for my well being. Jayd’s guidance on all areas of this project far, far surpassed my expectations. She’s just beyond. Adept in both art and story and able to provide extremely precise advice for both, Jayd is one of the most passionate comic story editors I’ve ever come across. She really cares about getting it right. Jayd will hash out narrative tangles for hours, break down art direction and visual language, and tweak comic layouts to be more clear and economical. She’ll interrogate you on character motivations, prodding you towards a deeper, revelatory understanding of your own story than you thought possible. On the more logistic side of things, Jayd handily managed the process, made a project spreadsheet, and steadily guided me step-by-step to the finish line. She generously shared her expertise built from years of self-publishing and self-managing her own projects. Using examples from her own comics, she demonstrated and demystified all her processes in great detail, from visual inspiration gathering, script, layout, and ink. She even pulled double duty as a colorist for me (quite beautifully!) to make sure the project would make the deadline. Probably the greatest and most unexpected side effect of all this: In wanting to learn to prioritize fun and health during my comic making process, I wound up also making the best work of my life. I raised the bar of what I believed I was capable of drawing. This mindset has influenced everything I’ve drawn since. After several months of working with Jayd, I have a finished project I am so incredibly proud of and a newly rekindled joy for what this medium can do. It’s such a meaningful gift that I can hold this comic in my hands and say, “This was fun!! I’ll make another!!” and I’m so grateful to Jayd for her generosity, her time, and her unrelenting belief that guided me through. - Arielle "I’m super happy to say that all the positive testimony among Jayd’s former mentees are not exaggerating: Jayd is excellent with providing practical, grounded, yet empathetic advice." —Victoria
I started a mentorship with Jayd after struggling with an ambitious, long-term personal comic project. Specifically, I was struggling much harder with the writing process than the artistic process. I was running around with all sorts of documents (spreadsheets, lore documents, you name it!) for the project, never breaking past the multiple drafts stage. After a few years of going in circles, I was very frustrated with both myself and my creative process, even getting to a point where I didn’t feel like drawing at all if I wasn’t going to have stable story and character concepts. I had heard of Jayd’s mentorship services for some time, and I figured that since I had never taken dedicated classes or had a mentor for writing, it would be worth signing up. I’m super happy to say that all the positive testimony among Jayd’s former mentees are not exaggerating: Jayd is excellent with providing practical, grounded, yet empathetic advice on not just the act of writing and drawing a comic, but also on providing advice on your creative mindset. With writing, she will help you with things like constructing more cohesive narratives, mapping character motivations and emotions, and making more sense of your own world. Her advice has helped me be far more purposeful with my writing and identify blind spots or things that I had not considered or prioritized enough when it came to writing stronger concepts. With your creative mindset, she will also helpfully point out any faulty, unhealthy, or otherwise ineffective habits or ways of thinking that may not have ever occurred to you, which was just as (if not more) important than the writing advice itself. Her direct advice related to my mindset helped me confront some harsh truths of how or why I was doing certain things the way I do, and yet none of this advice in the latter camp ever felt judgmental on me as a person. In either case, all advice felt tailored to meet you where you are at any given point in the mentorship, and she was always prepared to address any concerns that came up. When I initially spoke with Jayd, our understanding was that most of the mentorship would be more writing-focused, focusing on story development, outlining and scripting. Therefore, by the end of the 12 weeks, we anticipated we’d have a complete, final story outline with a completed pilot chapter script. Instead, by the end of the 12 weeks, she had helped me far surpass that goal with considerable work on the pilot chapter pages and a few chapters’ worth of rough script drafts. This likely wouldn't have been possible without Jayd’s excellent guidance and expertise. Because I was able to surpass the initial goal, I can also speak to a limited degree on the artistic advice: Most of my concerns on the visual side were often limited to things that could mostly be resolved with practice, experimentation, and looking up resources, but when I did have specific questions related to comic drafting and composition, Jayd was likewise helpful in providing practical advice and what to consider when I was looking up resources. Overall, working with Jayd has given me an incredibly fresh second wind on my creative endeavors. I feel a lot more pride in my work and feel super eager to get drawing! I’m incredibly grateful for the mentorship, and if you have the opportunity to work with Jayd as well, I absolutely recommend it! - Victoria |
"Jayd is clear, straightforward, and steadfast in her feedback... Every idea and thought I had was taken seriously, without any judgment." —Laura
I came to Jayd in a scattered state. I had signed up for a comic writing course in a university's extended learning program, but a few weeks before, it was unceremoniously cancelled. In a panic, I started searching for a replacement, and I stumbled on Jayd’s website. I was incredibly fortunate. I came to Jayd with an unfinished comic from nearly 10 years ago, a loose idea that I wanted to rework the story, a smattering of notes, and a heavy burden of burn out and uncertainty. I’ve often floundered in art classes that focus on aesthetics and technical skills, and I wanted to try something new. I come to comics for their earnest storytelling and vulnerability first and foremost. When I explained my goals to Jayd in my initial interview, a plan was quickly formed to focus on writing and outlining my story. I thought I just needed help getting over thinking my ideas weren't worth pursuing, but after about two weeks, we had already broken through that. Before I knew it, I was working on the mechanics of my story, I was being more introspective about my characters, and I was banging out a workable outline to pursue my rework. We spent weeks not doing even a single sketch, which helped me feel like my story was actually worth something even without my flashy artwork. Jayd is clear, straightforward, and steadfast in her feedback. I’ve taken so many art classes over the years, and I found that the 1-1 setting helped me shed so many distractions. I felt no pressure to keep up with classmates, and I felt more free to ask to really dig into the particulars of my struggles. Every idea and thought I had was taken seriously, without any judgment. After 12 weeks, I have a more clear idea of how to move forward with my project than I’ve had for a few years. If you’ve got an open mind, and are ready to do the work, this mentorship is healing. Even if you’re a highly skilled artist, I think anyone can benefit from the flexibility and introspection of Jayd’s teaching. - Laura |
